Colorado-born, California-based Erik Poppen (@erikpoppen_film) is a travel and landscape photographer known for documenting locations across multiple continents with a focus on natural landscapes from alpine peaks to desert dunes. His Instagram presence shows an extensive body of work spanning Europe, Africa, Asia and beyond. He shoots both digital and film, with his medium format work primarily using a Mamiya 645 system loaded with Kodak Portra. These images capture that range: frost-covered Swiss forests, Moroccan dunes at sunset, flamingos massed against turquoise water, Portugal's limestone arches carved by the Atlantic. Film slows down travel photography in ways that benefit Poppen's approach—fewer exposures per destination, more weight given to each location before committing it to Portra.
